Writing: Three Stages of Good Writing Practice

Revise

  • Seek feedback on your draft.
    • Consult peers, in addition to a tutor or professor, on all Six Principles.

    • Ask your reader to look for larger issues in the paper, rather than merely proofreading it.

  • Begin globally.
    • Ensure that PURPOSE is realized.

    • Check for sound ORGANIZATION.

    • Determine that SUPPORT is adequate.

    • Incorporate new INSIGHTS.

  • Continue locally.
    • Edit for COHERENCE.

    • Edit for CLARITY.

    • Proofread (take multiple passes for grammar, mechanics, typos, formatting, citations)
