Writing: Six Principles of Good Writing

Support

All generalizations and conclusions are justified by logically presented evidence.

Things to consider and ask yourself about the support of your writing:

  • Is each Division of Thought and each of the essay's generalizations supported with examples, illustrations, and specifics?
  • Are the generalizations made about each point fully explained?
  • Have you fully explained how each example illustrates or proves the essay's thesis or the paragraph's topic sentence?
  • Are all quotations fully commented on and analyzed?
  • Are all borrowed words and ideas--even if they are paraphrased-- given full and proper citation?

This information comes from the Campus Writing Program "The Six Principles of Good Writing" document.
